Best patio spots for long summer days

Where to go around town to sip, dine and enjoy the sunshine

The weather is finally gorgeous again (see ya, June gloom!), and we’re all leaving work and jetting to a nearby hot-spot for a drink, dinner or both. Our favorites are definitely those that offer a patio, big or small, allowing us to really soak in the final hours of sunshine each day.

Check out these top patios around San Diego that are ideal for those long summer evenings.

Kettner Exchange

This downtown restaurant features a rooftop patio lounge with cabanas, tables, fire pits and bar seating. They serve a variety of cocktails, wines and spirits — plus a killer happy hour — all al fresco.

2001 Kettner Blvd., Little Italy.

Park and Rec

If you find yourself in University Heights, head over to Park & Rec for a sunset drink. Their happy hour is Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. and can be enjoyed on their spacious patio that provides plenty of room for larger parties with multiple bars, games and TVs.

4613 Park Blvd., University Heights.

Queenstown Public House

The New Zealand-themed restaurant offers a relaxing sun room-style patio that is ideal for soaking up those last few hours of sun. Whether it’s the heffer burger with fatty fries, chicken and waffles or a simple, summery cocktail you’re looking for – they have it here.

1557 Columbia St., Little Italy.

Kentucky mule lovers, this one is for you. Head to Starlite for a charming feel with strung lights on the patio and rustic wooden walls surrounding the tables. They offer a full dinner menu and $8 Kentucky colonels all night on Wednesdays.

3175 India St., Mission Hills.

Soda and Swine — Liberty Station

Enjoy a taste of the outdoors at Soda & Swine, where they serve up decadent drinks and meaty-treats at their newer location in Liberty Station, complete with outdoor seating. Pro tip: the Brussels sprouts here are a must.

2750 Dewey Road, Suite 104, Liberty Station.

Ballast Point Little Italy

Ballast Point’s Little Italy location offers a full outdoor bar and patio area that is made for sipping beers in the sunshine. There are also private cabanas on the patio that can be rented out for a more luxurious beer-drinking experience.

2215 India St., Little Italy.

FIRESIDE by The Patio

New to Liberty Station and owned by The Patio Group, Fireside focuses on fire-cooked food and heat-infused cocktails. The outdoor space offers tables, lounge areas and bar seating with plenty of shade for sunny day. Enjoy watching your food get grilled, smoked and charred to perfection on the huge outdoor grill.

2855 Perry Road, Liberty Station.

Puesto at The Headquarters

Nothing competes with a cold margarita on a warm summer day. Puesto’s patio space, located in The Headquarters by Seaport Village, is perfect for a more upscale Tuesday experience. They offer $2.50 tacos, $3.50 Modelo Especial Cans all night and $6 margaritas from 3 to 5 p.m.

789 W. Harbor Drive, The Headquarters.

Bagby Beer Company

The massive outdoor area has something for everyone, including tables for big parties, standing areas, bar seating, lounge areas and plenty of room for kids to play, as well. The wood-and-steel patio space has large umbrellas to help keep you cool from the sun while still enjoying San Diego weather. Oh, and the beers are nothing to scoff at either.

601 S. Coast Highway, Oceanside.

Panama 66

Views of beautiful art and Balboa Park make this location a hot spot to stop by all year long. Check out original sculptures and walk around the courtyard with your drink in hand, stop by the bar or set up at a table and order some delicious eats like the braised lamb sandwich or a smoked salmon salad.

1450 El Prado, Balboa Park.

ChuckAlek Biergarten – North Park

The very North Park-esque Biergarten is full of graffiti art, trees, red umbrellas and beer. Enjoy beers from the owner’s vista brewery, ChuckAlek Brewing, or a cold brew coffee.

3139 University Ave., North Park.

The big, blue Pacific Ocean is just mere steps away from your table at this oceanfront restaurant, ideal for catching a sunset with a cocktail in hand. Sip on drinks while munching on some quality California cuisine for a relaxing finish to the day.

723 Felspar St., Pacific Beach.

Stone Brewing World Bistro and Gardens – Escondido

Stone’s Escondido hub boasts a garden area, complete with ponds, mini-waterfalls, trees and peaceful sitting areas. You can dine at the restaurant on favorites like beer cheese soup or opt to cruise around the land with an ice-cold brew.

This eatery was once a Hillcrest home and has been renovated into a brew-focused restaurant, complete with a cozy, shaded patio. The outdoor area offers close access to the upper level bar and plenty of seating.
