Brief History of Sacramento
Founded by John Sutter in 1848, Sacramento is the capital of the state of California. In 1839, John Sutter built a place called Sutter’s Fort, which was an agricultural and trading colony in California. The actual city of Sacramento developed from Sutter’s Fort. During the famous gold rush, Sacramento became a major center for agriculture and commercial business as well as a terminus for stagecoaches, wagon trains, the Pony Express and the First Transcontinental Railroad. Today, Sacramento is often called Sacto, Sactown, Sacratomato and Sac by locals. It also has the nickname “River City”.

Old Sacramento is where one can enjoy a walk on lovely cobbled streets and tour preserved or restored buildings, some dating as far back as the 1860s. Old Sacramento features rides on steam-hauled trains and paddle steamers.
For a more modern scene, the Esquire IMAX Theatre of Sacramento provides great entertainment for both couples and families. Or, couples can take a cruise on the Alameda Harbor Bay Ferry between the historic ports of San Francisco and Sacramento.
