For history buffs, National City is the second oldest San Diego County city and was originally known as El Rancho del Rey – meaning the Ranch of the King. Listed as a California Historical Landmark, the National City California Southern Railroad Depot was built in 1882 and is most interesting to visit. Other attractions include the port area along San Diego Bay which is part of Naval Base San Diego and Café La Maze, established in 1941 and one of the city’s most historic dining restaurants.
Residents find the Westfield Plaza Bonita Shopping Mall in National City convenient in that it provides a newer playground, café terrace, and a movie cinema on-sight. Also check out Brick Row on Heritage Square which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This significant part of the city’s history is in keeping with the charming Victorian environment.
