A quiet tempo and small town charisma is appreciated by residents of the semi-rural Valley Center located in North County approximately an hour’s drive from San Diego. Some of this region is still dedicated to crops including avocados, lemons and oranges. Other crops are lovely ornamental florals including lavender. The once yearly community event, Valley Center Western Days, features a rodeo and parade.
Two major Indian casinos have contributed to the town’s growth; however, there are still no chain department stores here. Residents shop at smaller locally owned stores or drive to nearby Escondido. Key Creek Lavender Farm is a USDA Certified Organic Lavender Farm that hosts an essential oil distillery, an interesting lavender labyrinth and a gift shop. When it’s blossom season Key Creek is a must visit and a local favorite.
